Paint Like Monet

Join me for three days of acrylic painting en plein aire

in the beautiful Napa Valley

October 6-8, 2017

Napa Valley, California offers a stunning landscape in the autumn. This "secret season" offers up rich colors and gorgeous vistas to paint.  The weather is a bit cooler than the hot summer and the foliage is bursting with color.

Join me for three glorious days of painting the beautiful landscape of Napa. Rolling hills, gnarly vineyards and Tuscan-inspired buildings await you.

I'm revisiting my roots in this workshop. With years of abstract painting under my belt, it feels good to return to my classical training. Using Monet and the American Impressionists such as Childe Hassam, John Henry Twachtman and Daniel Garber as our guides, we will explore the color and texture of the landscape.

Starting out each morning at Napa Valley Art Supplies, I'll demonstrate painting techniques, discuss materials and answer questions. Then we're off to one of several sites to paint for the afternoon.

Each evening is casual. Gather with other students for wine tasting and dinner or head back to your lodgings to rest.

Set aside Sunday for a no-host dinner with everyone. Location to be announced.

Topics I'll demonstrate:

  • Abstracting the Landscape
  • Composing Great Paintings
  • Blocking in the Underpainting
  • Use of Local Color
  • Mutes, Tints and Shades
  • Lights and Darks
  • Paint Handling and Brushwork
  • Tools and Materials
